Metatarsalgia is an inflammation of the nerve that runs between the third and the fourth metatarsal (foot) bones.

With metatarsalgia, your small toe nerve becomes compressed between two displaced foot bones, causing inflammation and pain.

It is most common in middle-aged women. The classic symptom is pain in the front (ball) of the foot. Many people say it is “like walking on pebbles.” Every step you take is filled with pain, causing further inflammation and pain.
