Heavy school backpacks can cause serious back problems for kids.

Our very own Dr. April Cardwell, D.C. gives tips on NORCO5 News to help keep kids’ backs safe as they lug around overweight bags this school year.

“A lot of kids may have a problem before they’re even wearing the backpack, and then it just kind of worsens it. Maybe they’ve got headaches and they’re wearing a bag that’s heavy so their heads going forward and their creating a lot of tension in their lower neck,” Dr. Cardwell, D.C. says.

Many injuries occur from children and teens carrying more than 20% of their body weight in their back packs, Dr. Cardwell, D.C. says that should be limited to 10%.
