I’m sure it’s no surprise to you that cold and flu season is upon us. Signature Health program looks at multiple factors that may be holding your health back. A few of the big ones are diet, lifestyle, and supplementation. Let me give you some suggestion on how to build up your immune system to keep it strong and lessen your chances of catching what’s going around.

Let’s start at the top with diet.

1) Grass-Fed Beef. Yep, that’s right. Grass-fed beef comes from cows that eat what they were meant to eat — grasses! Not corn or grains. This results in far greater health benefits for you and for the environment. Win, win!

Grass-fed beef is very high in vitamins A and E, omega-3 fatty acids, beta-carotine, zinc, and CLA (conjugated linoleic acid). CLA is three to five times higher in grass-fed beef as opposed to grain-fed beef and is an immune system enhancer.

Don’t confuse “organic” with grass-fed since many “organically raised” cows are fed a diet of organic corn. However most grass-fed cows are raised organically. Grass-fed and organic is ideal.

2) Coconut Oil. Besides being amazing for your thyriod and metabolism, coconut oil contains high amounts lauric acid which converts to monolaurin in your body. Monolaurin is the actual compound found in breast milk that strengthens a baby’s immune system. Make sure when you’re picking out your coconut oil it’s organic, unrefined, and contains no GMO’s.

Alright next, lifestyle.

3) Get enough sleep. Personally I don’t think it’s any coincidence that cold and flu season and the holidays go hand in hand. We try to fit everything in at this time of year. Shopping, work parties, kid parties, visiting relatives, traveling, etc. My advice, pace yourself. Make it a priority to get at least seven to eight solid hours of sleep every night. You need to recharge your battery.

Last but not least, supplement.

4) Probiotics. It’s not vitamin C or D or echinacea. All of those things are great but 80-85% of your immune system health is dependent on how healthy your gut is. Poor gut health equals poor health. It’s that critical.

I know what you’re thinking, what about yogurt, sauerkraut, and kombucha? Those are great foods to be in your diet, but when comes to the amount good bacteria you need to deal with the beating your gut takes on daily basis, it’s just a drop in the bucket. It’s best to supplement with a quality, pharmaceutical grade probiotic to make sure you’re getting enough.
